Types of Dentures

For older adults, there are several types of dentures available, each tailored to your unique needs. The most common options include:

Complete dentures, also known as full dentures, complete dentures are used when all natural teeth are missing. They are removable and consist of full sets of teeth and gums, available in two forms:

Immediate Dentures

For complete dentures, you might need to have some or all of your teeth extracted. If this is the case, your gums need to heal before we can take impressions for your permanent dentures. During this healing time, we’ll fit you with immediate dentures so you’re never without teeth.

Immediate dentures are created from molds taken before your extraction surgery. While temporary, they ensure you have a full set of teeth as your gums heal, providing comfort and confidence during the healing process.

Conventional Dentures

Once your gum tissue has healed, we’ll take impressions to create your permanent dentures, also known as conventional dentures. These will be your long-term solution for a comfortable and natural-looking smile.

Partial dentures, often called “partials,” are used when only a few teeth are missing. These artificial teeth are held in place with clasps that attach to your remaining natural teeth, providing an excellent solution to complete your smile.

Partial dentures are removable and should be taken out at night for cleaning and storage, ensuring they stay in good condition and your mouth remains healthy.

Caring for Your Dentures

Caring for your dentures is important. Just like natural teeth, they require daily at-home care and regular professional check-ups.

Brush your dentures twice a day with a denture brush and cleaner. Avoid regular toothpaste, as it can be too abrasive and may scratch the surface of your dentures.

At night, remove your dentures and store them in a glass of denture cleanser or warm water. Avoid hot water, as it can warp and distort your dentures, affecting their fit.

We recommend annual checkups to ensure your dentures stay comfortable and get the care they need. Depending on your oral health and jaw changes, your dentures may need periodic adjustments or relining.
